Energy efficiency Maximum machine operating times thanks to coordinated components

By 2030, the EU's CO2footprint is supposed to be significantly reduced – further increasing the demand for emission-free machines. But electrohydraulic power units are required to drive the various main and auxiliary hydraulic functions with high power density even without a combustion engine. When designing these power units, the focus is on energy efficiency. From efficient synchronous motor technology to the optimisation of hydraulics - e.g. with clever pump strategies - throttling losses can be avoided and energy can be saved.

High modularity Custom system solutions with coordinated components

The HYDAC EcoPack always looks different. Because it's exactly how your machine's specific application needs it to be. From different voltage levels, motor technologies and water or air cooling to different pump designs and compact function control blocks. Rely on HYDAC's many years of experience: our compact power units from the EcoPack product family offer you a custom system solution based on coordinated components.

Our solution in detail: variable-speed electrohydraulic compact power unitsLet's talk about working hydraulics: how electrified machines use energy efficiently

HYDAC compact power units supply various main and auxiliary functions, such as sweeping or steering in electrified municipal machines, with hydraulic energy. In addition to the motor and the inverter, which converts the direct current from the battery into alternating current and controls the motor, a significant proportion is accounted for by both the pump and custom function control blocks, which are directly flange-mounted to the unit or positioned anywhere in the machine as a separate control block.

You can largely avoid throttling losses by splitting different pressure levels using double or triple pumps. You can use this saved energy to extend your emission-free machine's operating time or design a smaller battery.

  • Low-voltage ranges from 48 - 96 V and high-voltage ranges up to 420 V, other voltages on request
  • Up to 31 kW nominal power and peak power up to just above 50 kW
  • Noise-optimised pumps in a single, double or triple pump design
  • Hydraulic control flexibly integrated into control blocks, coupled with the right pump or a decentralised control block

EcoPack+: the upgrade for variable-speed demand-based flow control with application software

As a user, you no longer have to worry about the operating strategy. Whereas in applications with a combustion engine, the variable displacement pump is used to supply the hydraulic system as required, speed variability offers new possibilities. Use the new freedom provided by variable-speed demand-based flow control to supply your hydraulic system as efficiently as possible. An additional advantage is the reduced noise emissions, as the operating strategy couples the drive speed to the consumer's flow rate requirements.

Mastering complexity and reducing development workWith pre-validated plug-and-play systems, you can get up and running in just a few steps

The EcoPack+ needs nothing more than a release signal from you! No programming knowledge is required. Use our pre-validated function modules to benefit from the application software's extensive functions, which are essential for power unit operation. You also don't have to worry about efficient operation or the open-loop and closed-loop control of your HYDAC hydraulic power unit. In addition to closed-loop demand-based flow control, the application software offers you further functions such as a soft start and soft stop function and integrated power and error management.

Municipal machinesPermanent supply of the steering system and other functions

The electrification of small multifunctional vehicles, such as sweepers for parks or pedestrian zones, is steadily advancing. HYDAC offers compact power units with a supply voltage of up to 400 V and an output of up to 30 kW to ensure that the steering and sweeping brushes are continuously supplied with power. Our hydraulic power unit is also ideal for smaller auxiliary functions that are only required sporadically and for a short period of time.

FAQ

What IP protection rating does the EcoPack have?

Its IP rating is IP65 under DIN EN 60529 or IP6K9K under ISO 20653.

What BUS communication options are there?

Standard CANopen (SAE J1939 on request)

What noise level does the EcoPack have?

Depending on your application, we offer a wide portfolio of noise-optimised pumps. Depending on the pressure level and speed we can reduce sound pressure level measurements by up to 20%. That corresponds to a perceived sound reduction of up to 75%.

When should I opt for an EcoPack and when should I choose an EcoPack+?

The HYDAC EcoPack gives you full flexibility when it comes to implementing your operating strategy (e.g. setting a fixed speed depending on the function, splitting pressure levels with multiple pump solutions in conjunction with client-specific control blocks). The EcoPack+ sees us continue our easy-to-use principle, with the operating strategy for speed control included, not forgetting power management and error management.

What does the “+” in EcoPack+ stand for?

The hardware (inverter, motor and pumps) is from the EcoPack product range and features an added control unit with application software for speed control. The “+” stands for the application software, which offers additional features – like variable-speed demand-based flow control.

What efficiency increases does the EcoPack+ offer?

The energy savings achieved through the variable-speed flow-on-demand control depend on many factors, starting with the machine and ending with the respective load spectrum. As part of the testing of a modified test machine – a tractor (with a power of approx. 55 kW and weight of approx. 3.75t) where the hydrostatic steering system was supplied by the EcoPack+ – hydraulic energy savings of up to 80% were measured compared to a fixed displacement pump driven by a diesel motor.

How does the efficiency of the EcoPack+ rate in comparison to a unit with a load-sensing variable displacement pump?

In general, the EcoPack+ achieves higher efficiency, especially in standby mode and in the moderate flow rate range. In high flow rate demand applications, the systems are on an equal footing. However, efficiency depends on many factors, such as drive speed.

How does the noise level of the EcoPack+ rate?

In general, the EcoPack+ has a very low noise level, as the speed is coupled with the volume flow demand of the hydraulic system, i.e. the speed increases with increasing volume flow demand and so too does the noise level. If noise is a key element, a SuperSilent pump can be designed.

What supply voltage does the EcoPack+ need?

Since the hardware comes from EcoPack, it can cover a further range of 48 - 96 V and, in high-voltage ranges, up to a nominal voltage of 420 V. The control unit for the application software is supplied via the 12 or 24 V on-board electrical system.

What communication does the EcoPack+ use?

The SAE J1939 protocol is used for CAN communication between the vehicle control unit and the EcoPack+.

What is CAN communication needed for?

The EcoPack+ primarily receives a release signal via CAN communication. In addition, the EcoPack+ sends status messages about the operating mode as well as operating data (e.g. speed) to the vehicle control system. It is also possible to dynamically adjust the current limits of the power unit during operation – e.g. if the battery management system (BMS) limits the withdrawal current. The dynamic current limits are also sent to the EcoPack+ via CAN.

Is CAN communication mandatory?

No, CAN communication is not mandatory. The release signal can also be sent via an analogue signal.

What signals does the EcoPack+ need?

The EcoPack+ essentially only needs a release signal, which is either sent to the EcoPack+ via CAN communication or alternatively via an analogue signal. If desired, the customer can adjust the current limits dynamically.

What does the EcoPack+ application software do?

The main task of the application software is to control the speed of the unit in a closed circuit. The variable-speed flow-on-demand control is based on a hydraulic load-sensing signal. Like a variable displacement pump, the EcoPack+ adjusts the flow conveyed to suit the needs of the hydraulic system, but by changing the rotational speed rather than changing the displacement volume (as with the variable displacement pump). In addition, the application software helps with the power management of the machine by allowing the current limits to be adjusted according to the situation. The application software is also used to control release and error management.

How is the speed of the EcoPack+ controlled?

The speed of the EcoPack+ is not controlled by inputting a set speed. In fact, the speed is regulated in a closed control loop depending on the situational flow rate requirement. Demand is confirmed via a hydraulic load-sensing signal. The advantage of this is that no additional sensors are required in the hydraulic system.
